It’s a fact! If you choose a cruise that sets sail from a port that you can drive to, you will slash hundreds of dollars off your total cost when booking your cruise holiday. Just think about it, the cost of paying for airfare alone instantly adds an additional few hundred dollars to your total vacation price. If you plan on taking your kids too, the added cost for their air tickets can easily pay for one (sometimes 2) of your cruise boarding passes.

If you drive, gas to get to a port plus cruise port parking for the entire length of your cruise is still less expensive than purchasing flight tickets for the entire family. There are also many hotels that offer cruise travelers discount rates when staying over the night before or after your cruise trip. Many also offer what they call Park + Sleep + Cruise deals.

Important Passport Reminder for All Cruise Travelers!

As of June 1, 2009 - The U.S. government has started to implement the full requirements of the land and sea phase of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI).

The proposed rules require most U.S. citizens entering the United States at sea or land ports of entry to have a passport, passport card, or other travel document approved by the Department of Homeland Security.

Areas that fall under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI):

Canada | Mexico | Bermuda | Caribbean (includes 17 nations)

What does this mean? On Monday June 1st, 2009, all Mexico, Carribean, and Canada cruise passengers will need a valid passport (or a new passport ID card) to re-enter the United States after a cruise EXCEPT for what are known as a “closed loop cruises.” A closed-loop cruise is one that stays within the Western Hemisphere and leaves and returns from the same place.
